Colombo: Akin to a scene out of a thriller, an eight-year-old boy -  who was held captive with a knife to this throat by a gang - was rescued by police when his kidnappers attempted to grab the ransom the boy’s dad threw from a running train.

Mohammad Minhaj was returning home from class at around 8pm when he was kidnapped.

The leader of the gang is a friend of the boy’s father.

So when he told Minhaj that his parents had gone for a funeral and that he would take him to his parents, the lad never suspected him.

He instead took him to a deserted house in Hunupitiya, Wattala, where the other suspects held him captive , while the mastermind negotiated with the child’s family and settled for [Sri Lankan] Rs3 million for his safe return.

Minhaj’s father was asked to throw the money from a running train at a particular place and not to inform police.

However, the police was alerted and three police teams were on the case.

The four suspects -  aged between 16 and 24 years - have been arrested and the child united with his family.
