Even before being commissioned, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant had developed leaks and leading environmentalists have urged the Indian government to protect Sri Lanka from the nuclear power plant, ‘The Island’ reported.
Environmental Lawyer Jagath Gunawardene noted that necessary steps should be taken by the proper Atomic Energy Authority to ensure the radiation levels in the sea water and air to establish whether any radioactive materials had reached the country already.
He told ‘The Island’ that the relevant authorities should consider this as a serious matter and act immediately to safeguard Sri Lankans, especially the people of Northern and Eastern provinces.
“If there is any major leak it will devastate Sri Lanka,” Gunawardene stressed.
As there wasn’t any immediate danger of any radiation leaks, last year Atomic Energy Authority chief Dr. Ranjith Wijewardena urged the public not to panic over KKNPP, noting that people living in the Northern Province should not be frightened of the plant, requiring mass evacuations.
Kudankulam is located in the Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu, 25 km North-East of Kanyakumari and 35 km from Nagercoil, and approximately 220 km from the western coast of Sri Lanka.
According to Indian media reports, the Russian experts working there are unable to stop the leaks.
