Lankan housemaid hangs herself in Saudi

A 17-year-old Sri Lankan housemaid has committed suicide in Saudi Arabia by hanging.

She had worked in Saudi Arabia for three after going thee at the age of 14, according to Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Employment, Development and Welfare Thalatha Athukorala, the ‘Lankadeepa’ newspaper reported.

The minister said that the girl had travelled to Saudi Arabia with her parents’ consent on tourist visa obtained with forged documents.

The body of the victim is now in a mortuary in Saudi Arabia and the Sri Lankan foreign ministry is making arrangements to bring the body to the country.

A case will be filed against the dead girl’s parents for forgery, the minister said.

The victim, a resident of Avissawella, had travelled on a forged passport at the age of 14 and had gone back to Saudi Arabia for taking up a new job on a tourist visa, after returning to Sri Lanka for a vacation after two years.

She had complained to her parents about harassment by the news employer and had urged them to bring  her back to Sri Lanka.
