A probe into the alleged involvement of elements in the Sri Lankan security forces with a gang of criminals which organises smuggling of people by boats to Australia, has been launched by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), ‘The Island’ reported on Tuesday.

Information has surfaced that the gang, having taken money from would be illegal migrants for the long and hazardous journey, in conspiracy with security force elements, tip off the authorities to have them arrested even before they leave Sri Lankan shores.

People who were caught while attempting to flee to Australia recently have revealed this information about the gang.

In recent days, two groups of Tamils were arrested in Batticaloa and Kaluwamodera, while they were ready to flee to Australia but not a single person behind the two smuggling efforts were arrested.
