Liquor looting: Army officer remanded

Maligakanda Magistrate and Additional District Judge, Jayaki de Alwis, ordered the remanding of an Army Captain till 22 April, over charges of looting a lorry transporting whisky.

The suspect Sajith Roshantha surrendered before the Maligakanda Courts through a motion.

The suspect is accused of looting a lorry transporting whisky and other foreign liquor on 21 February at Maradana.

While Maradana Police were looking for the suspect he had surrendered to the Maligakanda Courts through a lawyer.

Maligakanda Courts had earlier released six suspects in connection with the same incident, including three who were attached to the Police Anti-Terrorist Unit.

Doctor beats up five-year-old

The police unit of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has commenced a special investigation into an incident where a doctor had allegedly beaten a five-year-old child.

When the child had visited the hospital with his mother for medical treatment, he had tapped on the door of the doctor's room, whereupon the doctor had taken the child into the room and assaulted him.

Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the NCPA Police Unit, W.P. Bopitigoda, and his team of officers under the instructions of the Director of the NCPA, S.P. Sandungahawatte, have recorded a statement from the child's mother in relation to the incident.

In addition, steps have been taken to produce the child before the Judicial Medical Officer, stated a high ranking police officer.

The same officer said that investigations are being conducted based on Penal Code Section 308(A) regarding cruelty to children as well as under amendment 16 of 2006 of the Code into whether there had been any adverse psychological effects on the child.

Two cops interdicted for trying to hide incident

Two police constables attached to the Welikade police were interdicted after the weapon belonging to a constable attached to the security contingent of Kotikawatte Pradeshiya Sabha member Prasanna Solangaarachchi accidently fired injuring another constable.

The injured policeman is Prasanna attached to Wellampitiya police.

The incident had occurred last Friday (05) night in a temporary abode constructed for policemen at Himbutana.

The trigger of the gun had accidently pulled after it got entangled on a loose coir mat when one constable was passing it to another.

They were interdicted for attempting to hide the incident from superior officers.
