Following the beheading of Sri Lankan maid Rizana Nafeek in Saudi Arabia, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) is planning to set up a finger identification system to detect the actual age of those who intend to work overseas, Ceylon Today reports.

Chairman of the SLBFE, Amal Senadhilankara, said the setting up of the finger identification system that can detect the actual age of the migrant worker, is very important after what had happened to Rizana.

“What befell Rizana was mainly due to the forged passport that stated she was 23 years of age, when in reality, she was just 17 when she was accused of murdering an infant in Saudi Arabia. The system will soon be in operation, and it will help curtail recurrence of such incidents,” he said.

“The SLFBE has a series of upgraded welfare plans for migrant workers. A proper legal framework is also underway with more lawyers and interpreters for migrant workers. The SLBFE also intends to post more staff in the Middle Eastern region,” he added.

According to SLBFE, there are 76,644 Sri Lankans employed in Saudi Arabia and 855 SLBFE registered agencies are in operation.

The complaint hotlines for workers to contact SLBFE are: 0094 011 2879900, 2879901 and 2879902
