Man hacks five of family to death, witness survives

SRI LANKA: Police have arrested a man suspected of hacking to death five persons and critically injuring one in the early hours of on Tuesday at Vihara Halmillakulama in the Anuradhapura police area.

Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana revealed to The Island that the police would record a statement from the only person who survived the gruesome attack.

Survivor, KA Piyadasa, who was the head of the household, was in a serious condition.

The police had been informed of the killings around 7am by a victim's relative.

Those killed were Piyadasa’s wife, son, daughter, sister-in-law and his son.

Piyadasa was being treated at the intensive care unit of the Anuradhapura hospital as he had received cut injuries to his body.

Police had not yet recovered the weapon used to kill the victims, he said.

The sister-in-law and her son had come along with a man from Mahiyanganaya, believed to be relative of the victims on Monday after having sold a land.

The man who came with them had been drinking outside the house on that fateful night and disappeared in the morning. Police suspect that the man had robbed Rs. 350,000 after killing the five and injuring the owner of the house.

Police investigations are underway to arrest him.
