Mastermind behind Rs 4.2 million heist nabbed

Matale police arrested the mastermind behind the robbery of Rs 4.2million (Dh120,000).

The main culprit plotted to steal from a safe with seven of his accomplices, who bound and gagged a man in Hulangamuwa and robbed Rs. 4.2 million.

The police have managed to recover Rs 4,000,627.

 The Island newspaper reported that the suspects were from Padiyapelella, Matale and Mehikhinna in the Central province.

A vehicle worth four million rupees which was used in the robbery has been taken into police custody.

Police said that the toy pistol used in the robbery and the pair of shoes, the main suspect had worn had been set ablaze.

When the robbers stuck, the victim G B Ariyaratne who is the manager of two liquor shops in Madawala in Kandy and Ukuwela in Matale, had brought the day’s collections home and kept it in his safe.

The main suspect had given Rs. 90,000 of the loot to the second suspect in order to have a fair deal.

The team had hidden the parts of the loot in the hole of a tree near a waterfall in Padiyapelella, in a garage in Menikhinna and at his residence in Warakura, police said.

Police investigations revealed that the main suspect had worked in one of the liquor shops for seven years and was a close associate of the victim.
