A Sri Lankan airplane was forced to return to Colombo after pilots detected  technical problem a few minutes into the flight.

The Mihin Lanka flight, en route to Dhaka in Bangladesh, landed safely on Sunday morning at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), local media reported.

Flight MRL501, which was scheduled to take off at 7.25am with 159 passengers and seven crew, had departed at 9.30am from Colombo airport.

The plane returned to BIA at 10.20 am, Dhaka-bound Lankan passenger Mohamed Jailan told the media.

Mihin Lanka’s head of commercial division Rohan Perera said authorities were checking the aircraft to determine the technical problem.
