Mom asked to remove abaya to see sick child

Colombo: A mother of a sick child at Lady Ridgeway Hospital in Colombo was asked to remove her abaya when she visited the hospital on April 13 around 9.30 am to see her child who was diagnosed with dengue fever, ‘The Sunday Leader’ reported on Sunday.

She said the nurse who was on duty, at the time she visited the hospital, asked her to remove her abaya if she wanted to enter the hospital premises.

When the nurse was questioned she had said that the traditional clothing might frighten the children and the child’s mother had then asked if it was alright if she could wear a light-coloured shawl instead.

The staff had told the woman that though this would be allowed, she could not cover her face even with a light coloured shawl.

The Director of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital Dr. Ratnasiri Hewage, when contacted by ‘The Sunday Leader’, denied the allegations and said there were women at the hospital who wear their traditional dresses.

“There is no such policy (to stop women from wearing the abaya). Any group can wear their own costume,” the director said.
