The Police Department together with Certis Lanka on Thursday granted Rs. 1.5 million rupees and new year gifts to the two children who lost their father and mother–– Police Constable 4930, Weligama Liyanarachchige Sunil and his wife Apsara––at the hands of drug dealers on November 16, 2013.

They were brutally murdered at their residence at Ullala, Masmulla in the Kamburupitiya police area.

Asurinda Sulakshana (7) and Dulana Yasithma (3) were accompanied to the Police Headquarters for the award ceremony by their maternal grandfather, U. A. Indrasena.

Inspector General of Police, N. K. Illangakoon, explained how constable Sunil had sacrificed his life to maintain law and order in the country.

Sunil joined the Police Department in 2001 and served more than 13 years. He was also attached to the elite police commando unit, the Special Task Force (STF).

The IGP said: "We thought the danger the police officer faced during the war against terrorists was over when terrorism was defeated. Six officers have sacrificed their lives since the conclusion of the war while trying to maintain law and order and Sunil became the fifth such victim."

Some traffic police officers had been killed while on duty and some police personnel had been permanently disabled while performing their duty. That showed the risks the police officers faced, the IGP said.

He also thanked the Certis Lanka for granting Rs. 500,000 to the children of Sunil and Apsara and coming forward to sponsor their education.

IGP Illangakoon praised President Mahinda Rajapaksa for having instructed Minister Wimal Weerawansa to complete the children’s partly built house and thanked Education Minister Bandula Gunwardana for having helped admit the elder of the two children to Rahula College, Matara.
