Politician forced teacher to kneel

SRI LANKA: Puttalam High Court Judge Priyantha Fernando on sentenced former North Western Provincial Council member Ananda Sarath Kumara guilty of ordering Sushila Herath, a member of the tutorial staff of Isuru School, Navagattegama to kneel down at the school grounds a few months ago, to two years rigorous imprisonment suspended for seven years.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 50,000 and Rs 300,000 as compensation to the aggrieved party.

In the event the convict failing to pay the fine, he would be sentenced to another six months in jail and if he failed to pay the compensation he would be sentenced to a one year prison term.

The former Provincial Councillor was arrested by Navagattegama police in July, 2013.

 The complainant teacher had asked the daughter of the convict who was studying in her school to lengthen her school uniform as it was too short and the irate politician had subsequently ordered the teacher to kneel down before him.

Meanwhile the teacher  Susilaa Herath says that she would use the money received as compensation to create a fund to grant scholarships to poor students.
