Colombo: Pronounced dead after a premature birth, the baby battled for life for a week before he was resurrected, only to pass away after some time.

Chandani Jayatilake of Anamaduwa was admitted in Kurunegala Hospital last month and on April 30 delivered a premature baby boy as she was just in the 26th week of pregnancy, reported Daily Mirror.

“The doctors said I had an abortion. They informed my husband and discharged me from hospital. We even held an almsgiving ceremony for our still-born baby on the seventh day,” the mother was quoted as saying.

“Soon after that event, we got a call from hospital informing us that the baby was alive. And I was asked to be present there to nurse my child. I rushed to the hospital and saw my baby boy in the ward. I was very happy,” Jayatilake added.

Hospital Director, Dr. Palitha D. Yapa said, “The woman gave birth after 26 weeks of gestation. Normally, a baby born 28 weeks after conception is considered healthy. Births before 28 weeks are regarded as abortions. However, he said, this premature baby was saved due to the commitment of pediatrician P N Siriwardane.

The new mother thanked the doctors for saving her baby during a period when the nurses were on strike.

But their joy was short-lived. The infant developed several complications affecting his organs and finally passed away.
