Sri Lanka faces threat from computer hackers

According to a leading anti-virus company, Sri Lanka is vulnerable to computer hackers and it has been ranked at 8 ahead of India and the Maldives Island, in a Bloomberg report, Colombo Gazette reported on Tuesday.

As per Internet World Stats, an estimated 3.2 million people, about 15 percent of Sri Lanka’s population, were online last year and 51 percent of the users faced online assaults.

Russia, which is ranked 1st on Kaspersky’s list of countries, found that 59 percent of its users there faced online assaults, with the highest percentage of computer attacks.

The Bloomberg report said cyber criminals are likely to go where there are fewer defences, when targeting consumers.

With millions of new Internet users every year and fewer resources to devote to security, developing markets provide such an opportunity.
