Suspended soldier hits, drags and rapes young mum

SRIL LANKA: A soldier of the Sri Lankan army was arrested by the Mahawilachchiya police earlier this week for hitting a 31-year-old mother of one with a wooden pole and after she fell unconscious, he carried her to a nearby paddy field and raped her, ‘Mawbima’ reported.

The victim was a resident of the Pemaduwa area in Asokamalagama, Mahawilachchiya and the suspect, aged 24, a father of one from the same area.

When the victim was walking towards a pre-school to pick her kid up, the suspect, who had come on a bicycle, offered her a lift and as she refused his request, he had stopped the bike and hit her with a wooden pole.

Police investigations revealed that when she fell unconscious, the suspect took her to a nearby paddy field where she was raped and later when she regained consciousness, he pressed a nerve on her neck and she fell unconscious again and thereafter, he raped her once more.

Police said that the suspect had been temporarily suspended from service due to a similar incident earlier and is an accused of the case pending in the Anuradhapura magistrate court.

The victim has been taken to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital while the suspect was due to be produced before Anuradhapura magistrate court.

Mahawilachchiya police are conducting further investigations.
