Police investigations revealed that the suspects had been taken into custody a week after their alleged links to the killings and the police spokesman said that the daughter had helped her perpetrators to kill her own father and mother after giving her parents sleeping tablets before they retired to bed.

The girl’s parents had objected to their daughter’s affair with the main suspect, one of the relatives said.

The victims, Shivaguru Ragu, 48 and Sundara Murthi Chipra, 42, were hacked to death at their residence in Chenkaladi, Batticaloa by the suspects when they were sleeping, while their 16 year-old daughter, who was not harmed by the killers, was sleeping in an adjoining room.

Camera helps nab paddy thief

The decision by a Sri Lankan rice mill owner to install a security camera paid rich dividends recently, as it enabled the Tissamaharama Police to nab the thieves who had been stealing paddy from the mill for quite some time.

The owner of the paddy mill in Polgahawelena, Tissamaharama, had found that paddy bagged for transport was being stolen almost every day. He had tried to catch the thieves but failed.

Then he bought a security camera and fixed it without anyone's knowledge.

The thieves, unaware that their actions were being recorded, continued to steal the paddy. Unfortunately for them, the police was able to arrest them with the help of the camera.

According to the police, the main suspect is a person who had been released from the Weeravila prison after he had finished his jail term. He had worked in the same paddy mill for almost a year. He was helped by his two sons in the theft.
