Tragic: Boy drowns while trying to save kite

SRI LANKA: A 17-year- old schoolboy, an advance level student of Mahasen National School in Nikaweratiya, identified as, WM Danushka, drowned in a lake at Wambatuwewa area on Sunday (June 19), as he attempted to save a kite, ‘Lankadeepa’ reported.

Nikaweratiya police said the victim, who had come to the town for an educational purpose, had returned home around 2pm on the day of the incident and as there was no one at home, he had gone to the location where his younger brothers had been flying a kite after having lunch.

As he reached the location, the kite had fallen into the middle of the lake after its thread got broken and he saw his younger brother swimming towards it. While cutting short his brother’s attempt, he had swum towards the kite, but had sunk in the mud and when his younger brother tried to rescue him by extending a hand, he told the younger to go back safely and inform their mother.

Since their parents were not at home, the villagers had admitted the victim to hospital after salvaging him but by that time he had passed away.
