Two arrested for porn on phones

Colombo Two youths with pornographic pictures saved in their mobile phones, were arrested by the Kurunegala Police on charges of possessing pornographic material.

They were arrested at the Kurunegala Central Bus Stand, and were produced before the Kurunegala Chief Magistrate, Kavindya Nanayakkara, who imposed a fine of SLR1,500 on each youth.

Police Sergeant M.U. Tennakoon of the Anti-Vice Squad filed the plaint, Ceylon Today reports.

Police officer caught with cannabis

The Anti-Corruption Unit of the Kandy Police nabbed a police constable, reportedly a member of an MP’s security contingent, with 2kgs of cannabis in his possession.

The suspect, Sarath Kumara (43), is a father of two, and resides in the Galthenna area in Kandy.

Sources said he had been attached to the Ministerial Security Division of Police for over 10 years.

His older brother is also said to be an officer serving the same Division while his father is a retired police officer.

Police are of the view that the suspect had been engaged in transporting cannabis for the last 11 years while serving at the Bibile and Moneragala Police Stations.

Following information received by the Anti-Corruption Unit, officers of the Kandy Police had apprehended the suspect at Mulgampola, while he was riding his motorcycle, transporting cannabis.

On being interrogated, he had informed the police that another 500gms of cannabis was hidden in a house in the Uduawela area in Galthenna.

Police sources said the suspect had been engaged in the illegal business over a long period of time, undetected, as he had been doing so in uniform. Investigations also revealed that big-time drug peddlers in Moneragala had maintained close connections with the suspect who had used his official position to sell illegal drugs.

One-year old baby dies in fire

A one-year old baby boy, identified as Hikkaduwa Liyanage Sameera Dias, died of burn injuries, when the hammock in which he had been kept caught fire.
Reportedly, the baby's father had gone to work while his mother had gone out in search of some leaves, having kept a pot of rice to cook on the hearth, leaving the older child and the baby in the hut.

When the mother returned, she had found her hut on fire, and the baby in the hammock had been burnt to death.
The older child had run out of the hut and had escaped unhurt.

The father of the infant is Hikkaduwa Somaratana (39), an employee of a fibre mill in Puliyankara-Madmpe, and his mother is M.A. Kusumawathie (45).
They had been residents of Kuliyapitiya before they came to live in Mugunawature.
