While chasing a rape suspect cop drowns in a well

A constable attached to the Habarana police station in the North Central province, while chasing a suspect wanted by the Kekirawa Magistrate for a rape case, went missing in the early hours of yesterday, and his body was found in a well of a Chena at Puwakpitiy, a few hours later.

Police Constable (64422) Weerasinghe Arachchige Sumudu Chinthaka (45), a resident of Kokawewa in Galenbindunuwewa, had unfortunately fallen into a well while chasing the rapist wanted for sexually assaulting an underage girl in 2011, when he had gone with a police team to arrest the suspect, police spokesman SSP Prishantha Jayakody told ‘The Island’.

The 23-year old suspect, who was wanted for several crimes including murder and robberies, had run away from his hideout in the Maradankadawala area, on seeing the arrival of the policemen who combed the area for the suspect but in vain.

Habarana police are conducting further investigations.
