Police officers prevent a murder and suicide attempt by a young man in Sri Lanka.

Unusual intervention by two senior police officers had prevented a person, who was in fury with his wife for allegedly having an illegal affair with his best friend, attempted to kill their 5-year-old daughter and commit suicide by pouring petrol over their bodies, local media reported.
Kurunegala police headquarters said they had arrested the man along with his wife and her paramour.

The incident came to light when Kurunegala SSP Ajantha Samarakoon and Headquarters Inspector Ajith Wansanatha were patrolling the area. They saw two people fighting near the Galebandara Temple on Kurunegala, Wathhimi road and stopped to inquire the reason.

The woman told the police officers that their arrival had prevented her husband’s attempt to kill their daughter and commit suicide by pouring petrol.

Both the husband and wife are 21 years of age while the paramour is 20 years and they all are farmers by profession.

According to police, the woman was married for the second time after being separated from her first husband and had eloped with the present husband’s best friend.

On the day of the incident, the relatives had brought the woman back and advised both to live together peacefully, but after the relatives left, the woman had met her lover on the same evening in Kurunegala town which led to the incident.

The husband had told the police that he brought a petrol bottle to commit suicide with their daughter, in case his wife elopes again.

The suspects were due to be produced before the Kurunegala magistrate courts and further investigations continue.
