Witness to the wedding elopes with bride

In a twisted tale of love and marriage, a schoolgirl from Gampola in Sri Lanka eloped with an attesting witness, just a couple of hour after her wedding with a schoolboy,  several local media reported.

According to the police, a bright Kandy girls’ school A/L student, who got nine As at the O/L examination, fell in love with a 19-year-old A/L student of another school in the same town.

When the two youngsters decided to spend the night together at the house of the girl’s friend, the residents of the house persuaded them to go to the Ulapone Registrar’s Office to register their marriage at about 4.30pm.

At the marriage registrar’s office, the attesting witness was a 22-year-old father of one child who was a former lover of the schoolgirl.

After a couple of hours, the residents of the house found that the new bride had eloped with her former lover -- the attesting witness at her wedding.

Apparently, the bride could not forget her ‘first love’, though the attesting witness forgot that he was married to another woman and was father of a child.

Villagers chased the eloping couple when they saw them holding hands but they managed to flee in a bus.

The following day, all those involved in this bizarre drama were summoned to the Gampola police station where the runaway couple was also present. The bride confessed to the police that despite her wedding to the student from Kandy, she was enchanted by her ‘first love’ and so had run away with him.

Police scolded the couple severely before all the parties agreed to settle the matter amicably.
