A Sri Lankan youth stabbed a woman to death after she refused to allow him to marry her underage daughter.

The youth from Kotuwala Wellampitiya approached the woman on Monday morning and sought her permission to marry her 14-year-old daughter. When the mother turned him down, he flew into a rage and stabbed her to death, according to a report in ‘The Island’ newspaper.

Police said they had arrested the 20-year-old suspect with the knife used to commit the crime. The victim, Anusha Maduwanthie (31), died on the spot and the 14-year old schoolgirl is said to be in a state of shock.

Police said the suspect had lunged with a knife at the girl but her mother had jumped in front of him to save her daughter and got stabbed.

Traveller held with immigration seals in his pocket

Security personnel at Chennai Airport in India have arrested a Sri Lankan after they found him carrying two ‘immigration permit’ rubber stamps in his trouser pocket, the ‘Ada Derana’ reported on Friday.
Airport officials said Nageem Abdul Sukkur, 41, came to Chennai to visit his uncle at Injambakkam and was to fly to Colombo at 2.30pm on Thursday.

“He was found carrying two rubber stamps normally used by immigration officials to give permission to arriving and departing passengers. Initially, we thought the passenger had stolen the rubber stamps when he crossed the immigration counters, but on checking we found all rubber stamps intact,” said an airport official.

Sukkur told security officials that an airport official had given him an order to make replicas of the two rubber stamps.

An expert said the passenger could be part of a team that helps people with duplicate passports.

“While making duplicate passports for people who want to return to India, the immigration departure permit from India has to be stamped so that they can land again. He could be carrying the stamps for that purpose,” he added.
