Authorities say a high school junior has tumbled 50 feet while hiking down a trail next to a New York waterfall and has died.

Rotterdam police say 17-year-old Carly Sinnott, of Clifton Park, was walking with five friends Tuesday night in the Plotter Kill Preserve in Schenectady County.

Lt. Michael Brown says Sinnott lost her footing while descending a trail next to a waterfall that drops from a 50-foot shale cliff into a rocky ravine. He says it took about three hours for firefighters to carry her out.

The 630-acre preserve 10 miles northwest of Albany has three waterfalls that are 40 to 60 feet high.

Sinnott attended Mekeel Christian Academy in Scotia. She was on the honor roll and captain of the volleyball team.
