The UAE has expressed its full support to the resolution on the family protection draft law, adopted by the GCC and Arab groups, Russia and China, and presented before the 29th session of the Human Rights Council, which has endorsed it.

This came in a statement made by Saeed Rashid Al Habsi, Acting Charge d'Affaires at the UAE Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva.

Al Habsi stressed that the UAE's conviction that the primary responsibility regarding care and protection of children "falls on the shoulders of the family," adding that children should grow up in a family environment and atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding for their personalities to develop fully.

He underscored that "the family is the natural and fundamental unit of society," adding that it is the natural environment for the growth and well-being of all its members. "Any attempt to ignore these facts and impose other frameworks and concepts of the family and its components, will be deemed a departure from the ordinary norms."

Al Habsi stressed the need to take into account national and regional particularities as well as various historical, cultural and religious backgrounds of countries when dealing with such topics in the Council. He urged members to refrain from imposing specific directions under the claim that there is any universal view.

He pointed out that the Human Rights Council, which is a forum for positive and constructive dialogue based on respect for different cultures and religions, should take into account the specificities of each community, adding that the Council should not turn into a forum for dispute as a result of including concepts and terms that do not enjoy international consensus, and can cause friction among member states.
