UAE forecaster blows away Dubai sandstorm fears

Hot weather is expected to add to the menace of a dust storm that is snaking its way through Sharjah and Dubai, with many concerned residents taking to social media to caution drivers of low visibility conditions.

The National Centre for Metrology and Seismology (NCMS) told Emirates 24|7 that the weather is not likely to turn extreme, as many suggesting on Twitter, with a spokesperson saying: “What we are seeing is not a sandstorm, but pockets of dusty winds in open areas.

“Some areas will experience a higher precedence of this over others.”

When quizzed whether rain may be in the horizon, aping the unstable weather that brought wet weather to these shores last week, the NCMS spokesperson did not rule it out.

He said: “We can expect rains possibly tomorrow and day after in the Eastern mountain region. Let’s wait and see.”

The dusty conditions, which are expected to continue until tomorrow evening, will hover over the Western emirates, with limited areas in the north and southern regions.

“Winds of up to 18 knots will reduce visibility in areas, with the dusty weather driving up the heat to peak at 48 degrees Celsius, with lows of 42 degrees,” he added.

Earlier, several residents tweeted about the growing dust, with EW saying: “The weather’s looking bad here outside the office; sandstorm Dubai.”

SB added: “The weather looks pretty bad; drive safe everyone.”
