UAE Islamic authority ruling on woman travelling in car alone with driver

The General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Endowments, the official centre for issuing fatwas and endowments in the UAE, has stated that it is permissible for a woman to travel by taxi or in a chauffeur-driven car alone, to work for example.

It is not ‘haram’ as long as the car is moving on the road, Al Khaleej newspaper reported the authority as saying.

The authority based its advisory on the view that roads are full of people.

Therefore, the woman in such places is safe and secure with people all around her without the presence of a ‘mahram’ (blood relative, such as son, brother or father).

The authority recommended the woman sit in the back seat of the car and abide by Sharia law governing dress and speech.

The authority added that it is best if the woman travels with a ‘mahram’ or with another woman accompanying her.
