An unknown donor set an Emirati prisoner free after paying diya (bloody money) to the victims of an Asian man he had knocked over while driving to Abu Dhabi for a job interview, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

Ali Hassan Mayouf, 26, had completed his four-month jail term in Sharjah for accidental killing but had remained in prison because he could not afford payment of the Dh-200,000 diya, Emirat Alyoum said.

“After five months in prison, Ali tasted freedom and returned to his family after donors paid his diya and the fine ordered by court,” it said.

“Ali described his imprisonment as a severe experience, adding that every day he had dreamed of getting out of jail….he said he had nearly lost hope of regaining his freedom hadn’t those benevolent people helped him.”

Ali has been ordered by court to pay Dh200,000 in blood money and a Dh5,000 fine for knocking over the Asian just after he set off from his home town of Khorfakkan to Abu Dhabi for a job interview after years of unemployment.

Ali said his father Hassan is the only supporter of the family of 11, adding that he could not pay diya as all his brothers are unemployed.
