A urologist has his licence cancelled and name revoked from the medical registry in the UAE for violating medical ethics.

Dr. Amin Hussein Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health Policy and Licensing in the Ministry of Health and Vice-Chairman of the medical licensing committee, said the inspection team discovered, during one of their visits to the medical companies, a number of medical prescriptions for depression and psychiatric problems that were prescribed by the urologist.

Dr. Al Amiri said the said doctor had earlier confessed to the same mistake, and had written an apology saying he would not repeat the act. However, when he was caught again, the committee decided to cancel his licence and revoke his name from the medical registry in the UAE based on Article (12) of the Federal Law No. (7) of 1975 concerning the human medicine.

He explained that such practices encourage both youngsters and adults to take narcotic drugs and the doctor’s action of prescribing random drugs with the right medical justifications may lead to dangerous practices and actions.

The law states that every licensed doctor must perform his duties according to the profession of medicine with utmost accuracy and honesty and should maintain the oath of the profession.

Dr. Al Amiri added that the Ministry of Health appreciates the role of the private sector in improving the profession and protecting the health of the community members. It is also very keen on stipulating laws and legislations for the medical profession and increasing inspections of private medical establishments to ensure their compliance to local and international standards.

In order to enhance and save the rights of patients, the ministry will take measures against those who infringe the UAE laws, he added.

The ministry has revoked registrations of five other doctors in the past five years for similar violations.
