Weekend of patriotism: Dubai-based NRIs celebrate Indian Republic Day

Patriotism will take centrestage this long weekend as India celebrates its 64th Republic Day.
 
Dubai-based NRIs will have several opportunities to join in the festivities, which will kick off this weekend and continue through the week as celebrities from India jet down to entertain and incite the spirit of the nation.

Where Did I Leave My Purdah? – Play, starring Lillete Dubey

What better way to enjoy the Indian Republic Day than by watching some of the country’s finest theatre actors come alive on stage?
 
‘Where did I leave my Purdah?’ stars Lillete Dubey, daughter Neha and Soni Razdan , inspired by the life of the veteran actress Zohra Saigal.
 
Directed by Mahesh Dattani, the play is set against the famed company theatres that performed dance dramas through the 1950s till the 80s.
Nazia is an actress who has been through four decades of performance and seven decades of personal travails and political upheavals.
 
She sailed through life on her talents that include a bizarre and funny look at life, though at the cost of affecting the lives of those who were unfortunate to be close to her.
 
Being staged at the Madinat Theatre, Souk Madinat Jumeirah on Friday, there are two performances to catch, at 6pm and 8pm.

Flag Hoisting
Indian High School

Organised by the Indian Consulate of Dubai, all Indians across the UAE are invited to attend the flag hoisting ceremony and attend the celebrations on January 26 at the Indian High School grounds, Oud Metha.
 
Indian Consul General, Sanjay Verma will attend the festivities, with the flag hoisting ceremony happening at 9am.
 
This will be followed by a march past by students from the school and a cultural performance.
 
Infinite India – Cultural performance with Shobhana

Conceptualised to enrich the inner self with meaningful creative moments, Tambourine Live is going nationalistic this Indian Republic Day as it brings soul inspiring, vibrant experiences through tailor-made live stage performances showcasing off-beat concepts and themes incorporating all genres of performing arts presented with finesse and an innovative style.
 
‘Infinite India’ is a celebratory confluence of Indian performing arts with artistes such as the award-winning actress, Padmashri Shobana, along with musicians Shashank Subramanian and Purbayan Chatterjee.
 
Split in two acts, the first will witness a dance recital by Shobana, who is renowned for her Abhinaya, her grace and skills.
 
She will be performing with her troupe in a recital specially designed for Republic day.
 
The second act will see a ‘Jugalbandi’ by Shashank and Purbayan, with the former storming into the field of music at age seven, and is presently considered as one of the best Bamboo Flute artistes recognised world over.
 
The BBC World TV have even telecast a documentary on Shashank titled ‘Destination Music’.
 
Meanwhile, Purbayan is a recipient of the President of India Award for being the “Best Instrumentalist of the country” at the age of 15.
 
They will be accompanied by leading percussionists Parupalli Phalgun on Mridangam and Anubrata Chatterjee on tabla.
 
Being held at the Sheikh Rashid Auditorium, Indian High School on Saturday evening, from 7pm onwards, tickets are priced from Dh75 up to Dh300.
 
Indian Ocean Live
Rixos The Palm Jumeirah

If you want to head bang your way with some Indian rock legends, then Rixos The Palm is the place to be at this Republic Day.
 
Indian Ocean will perform will perform for the very first time in Dubai, at the White X Beach Lounge, presented by Emax and brought to you by ADSS Events and Entertainment and MTV.
 
Performing alongside will be Dubai’s very own DJs Shadow and Blaze.
 
Entry is free for couples and ladies all night.
