Well-Being Index: UAE residents better off than peers in US, UK, Canada, Germany, France

The UAE has topped in the Middle East and ranked among the world's top 25 countries in terms of residents’ well-being, reveals a global survey conducted by Gallup.

Ranked #22 worldwide, the UAE is followed by Saudi Arabia (#27), Bahrain (#31) and Kuwait (#45) in the region.

Globally, the UAE outperforms a host of countries in the well-being index, including the US (#23), Canada (#24), Sweden (#26), Saudi Arabia (#27), Germany (#28), New Zealand (#29), Australia (#40), Malaysia (#41), UK (#44) and France (#48), among others.

Gallup's 2014 global survey was conducted among more than 146,000 interviews in 145 countries, which serves as a barometer of individuals’ perceptions of their well-being across five elements: purpose, social, financial, community and physical.

The index captures important aspects of how people feel about and experience their daily lives, including topics that span how much they like what they do, their social relationships, their financial security and their relationship to their community, as well as their physical health.

The 2014 Global Well-Being Index data showed that nearly one-third (30.8 per cent) UAE residents believe that they're thriving in more than elements: purpose, social, financial, community and physical.

Among the five categories, the UAE residents believe that they're are thriving most in the community, physical and financial categories as the country was rated highly in the three categories. The UAE was rated 9th, 15th and 24th, respectively, in the three categories.

Gallup's index showed that more than 40 per cent of the UAE residents believe that they're thriving community while 30 to 40 per cent per cent claim that they're thriving in Physical, Financial and Social categories.

Panama topped the list with 53 per cent residents thriving in more than three elements. The other top countries are Costa Rica, Puerto Rica, Switzerland, Belize, Chile, Denmark, Guatemala and Austria. While the countries sitting at the bottom of the list are Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cameroon, Togo, Tunisia, Congo Kinshasa, Ivory Coast, Benin, Haiti and Ghana.

The UAE was rated #14 and #16 in 2013 and 2010 ratings, respectively.
