During the last few years, the number of men opting for cosmetic surgery has increased significantly … so what’s the most popular procedure amongst them?

"When it comes to male patients, there’s a lot of gynecomastia, which is male chest reductions, and that’s very popular now," said Dr Allen Rezai.

Gynecomastia is a common condition amongst males where their breasts become abnormally large in size.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, the leading Senior Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon of the Elite Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery Group explained  that  this particular operation accounts for 48 per cent of the practice’s activity.

Dr Allen explains the causes of Gynecomastia.

"It can be hormonal, it can be based on the use of steroids, it can be a problem with testicular cancer, it can be a result of people who were overweight and lost weight and got the skin resulting in that form," he said.

The surgeon spoke of how men are getting more aware about their appearance and opting to change or enhance their looks.

"The number of male patients have increased by 40 per cent since a year ago, not just here but even at our London practice as well," explained the Doctor.

He added: "If we go back to five years ago, we had 95 per cent female patients and five percent males, but it’s around 60 per cent women and 40 per cent men now."

The practice operates in all general areas of cosmetic surgery, including the rare Diep flap breast reconstructive surgery which was done by Dr Allen and his team for the first time not only in the UAE, but in the Gulf region.

The top surgeries requested by both men and women, are rhinoplasty, gynecomastia, body contouring (that includes abdominoplasty and liposuction), and breast augmentations.

That procedure is also growing in popularity with British, Australians, French and American nationals – of which are the majority of male patients who opt to reduce their chest size.

Dr Allen explained: "For gynecomastia we have more patients from the US, where visitors come out here on holiday and then do the surgery at the same time."

He reiterated this cosmetic surgery holiday boom as an attribute to the never-ending world of change.

He continued: "Men are more aware of things they can change, even local people men come more and more to our practice, they all want to look better, they want to look younger, and keep themselves younger, they are not going to just pass through life without making any changes."
