Why your Dewa bill will not go up this year

A top official at the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has said that there are no discussions ongoing to increase the power tariff this year.

“No, we are not planning to raise the tariff,” Saeed Al Tayer, Deputy Chairman of Dubai’s Supreme Energy Council and Managing Director and Chief Executive of Dewa, told Emirates 24|7 on the sidelines of the recent Dubai Government Summit.

“There is no talk or plans of raising tariffs. It is not under discussion,” Al Tayer stressed.

Speaking on the sidelines of Dewa’s Earth Hour initiative, Khawla Almehairi, Dewa Vice-President for Marketing and Corporate Communications, said: “At the moment there is no change in that [the tariff].”

She, however, refused to comment whether reverse psychology of increasing tariffs to avoid wasting would be implemented. “I’m not in a position to talk about it,” she said.

Last week, Arabic daily 'Emarat Al Youm' had reported that the UAE Ministry of Energy will raise water and electricity tariff if consumers continue to waste energy and water.

This was stated by Mohammad Suhail Al Mazroui, Minister of Energy, Chairman of the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa). Read: UAE may hike utility rates... if consumers waste

“Dewa is not just an electricity and water provider. We are trying to be part of this ‘happy living’ that the Dubai leadership has been talking about,” Almehairi said.

She highlighted that Dewa’s 88 projects undertaken over the last year had made substantial impact.

“Until 2013, we managed to save more than 1,000GW in electricity and almost 4.9 billion in terms of water. These are cumulative figures. And in terms of money, we managed to save Dh62 million for Dubai.”

From July, UAE houses will switch on energy efficient bulbs in order to conserve energy and reduce the carbon imprint on our planet.

On March 29, Dewa and Dubai Government would step in for the 60-minute blackout to express their solidarity towards the global environment initiative – Earth Hour.
