Rescuers have managed to pick up 44 people from rough sea after an overcrowded passenger ship sank in eastern Indonesia. Twenty two people are still missing.

The Karya Pinang ship, which was carrying 66 crew and passengers, sank on Friday about seven miles off the cape of Watumanuk on Flores island in East Nusatenggara Province.

Riswan, an official of the local Search and Rescue Agency said on Saturday that so far no one has been found dead in the accident, thank to fishermen who rushed to the scene as soon as the mishap happened.

Riswan who uses a single name, added that the search for the missing passengers was halted due to the dusk and would be resumed on Sunday.

Ships have become a main source of transportation in Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago nation with more than 17,000 islands.
