Six foreign passengers including four Americans, one Japanese and one British citizen were on board a plane that crashed in Nepal early Tuesday, the tourist board said.

The small Agni Air plane was carrying 11 passengers and three crew to the Everest region when it crashed in bad weather in a field south of the Nepalese capital Kathmandu.

"The plane had taken off from Kathmandu airport with 11 passengers and three crew members to Lukla. Lukla is the gateway to the Everest region," the Nepal Tourism Board said on its website, confirming the nationalities of the six foreigners.

The plane was on its way back to Kathmandu after poor visibility prevented it from landing at Lukla.

Rescue teams have been dispatched to the crash site but their progress is being hampered by heavy rain and landslides, which are common in Nepal during the current monsoon season.
