Officials say a wooden bridge spanning a river in the northeastern Indian district of Darjeeling collapsed as local mountain villagers gathered on it for a meeting, and at least 13 people were killed.

Rescuers rushed to the scene and recovered more than 50 injured people from the riverbed area about 70 feet (21 meters) below, but dozens are still thought to be missing.

Top police official Surajit Kar Purakayaspha says the bridge over the Rangeet River fell apart as about 150 people gathered on it Saturday night to listen to speeches by local administration leaders in Bijanbari, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) from the hill town of Darjeeling.

The search was continuing through the night in the dark forest but will be widened to areas downstream Sunday.
