A Mumbai- New Delhi Air India flight with 117 passengers and six crew members on board landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport under emergency conditions on Tuesday night.

Air India call centre received an anonymous call alerting them of a bomb in a brown pouch on board AI-888.

Soon after take-off from Mumbai at 7:00pm India time, the pilot of the Airbus A-319 was asked by the Mumbai ATC to land at the nearest airport — New Delhi.

The aircraft was taken to an isolated bay to be sanitised by security staff and bomb squad.

The plane landed around 9pm and the sanitisation exercise took more than two hours. The passengers were taken out in batches of five after their identity and hand baggages were checked.

It has been learnt that the staircase was attached to the aircraft at least 30 minutes after it landed, despite protests by the commander of the flight.

CISF personnel said it was delayed because the cabin crew needed to check all the passengers thoroughly.

The aircraft was cleared of threat at 10.45 pm.
