Magnitude 7 earthquake in Vanuatu, tsunami alert lifted

A magnitude 7 earthquake hit early Friday the Vanuatu archipelago, causing a tsunami warning which was soon lifted.

L. intensity of this earthquake happened (Thursday at 7:33 p.m. GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers and 209 kilometers from the capital Port Vila, the US geological Survey USGS had initially was measured at 7.3 by the Pacific tsunami warning Center on the (NTWCs).

NTWCs warned against the risk that this earthquake does not generate dangerous waves up to three meters on the coast of the archipelago.

But he lifted the alert two hours later.

Dave Cross, manager of a tourist complex, said the quake was strongly felt on the island of Espiritu Santo. No known damage has yet been reported immediately.

This archipelago with 80 islands, one of the poorest countries in the world, is located on the " Ring of Fire " Pacific, where the collision of tectonic plates because of frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity significant.

So, in early April, a powerful earthquake occurred at more than 400 km from Port Vila. No tsunami warning had been issued, however.
