Moderate quake shakes eastern Nepal

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.0 shook eastern Nepal early Wednesday, US seismologists reported.

The epicentre of the tremor, which occurred at 5:10 am local time (2340 GMT Tuesday), was 63 kilometres (39 miles) southeast of the industrial hub of Biratnagar on the Indian border, according to the US Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

"This was a moderate earthquake and the tremor was felt in eastern hills as well as the southeastern plains," said Umesh Gautam, of the National Seismological Network of Nepal.

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake on the Nepal-India border in September last year killed at least 110 people across four countries, including three in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu.
