Mother of Gulf Air baby owns up in Philippines

A Philippine lawmaker says a woman acknowledged she is the mother of a baby who was apparently born on a Bahrain-to-Manila flight and then was later found alive - stashed in an airplane toilet trash bag.

Rep. Lani Mercado said the woman, who was traced by government investigators in her remote northern Apayao provincial home and requested to come to Manila for questioning, told her a heart wrenching story that forced her to abandon her baby. Mercado has called on the public not to judge the woman harshly.

Mercado said Thursday at brief meeting with the woman at her side, "She admitted it's her child."

Mercado refused to divulge other details of the emotional meeting, and said government investigators have asked her not to give details about the woman to the media.
