New graft case against Philippines ex-president

Philippine prosecutors have filed a non-bailable corruption complaint against former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in a move she says is aimed at keeping her in detention as she fights to be released on bail in a separate vote-tampering case.

Anti-graft court official Renato Bocar says the complaint was filed Monday against Arroyo and nine other former government officials for alleged involvement in the misuse of 365 million pesos ($8.7 million) in state lottery funds from 2008 to 2010, when Arroyo stepped down from nine turbulent years in power.

Arroyo, once regarded one of Asia's most powerful women, was arrested and placed in hospital detention last year for allegedly ordering the tampering of 2007 senatorial elections.

She has denied the vote-tampering charge and asked a Manila court to grant her bail.
