A Moscow-bound passenger jet made an emergency landing back in New York on Sunday after developing an engine problem shortly after takeoff, aviation officials said.

The pilot for the Delta Air Lines Boeing 767 "decided to return to JFK due to a left engine problem," a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said, referring to John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Spokeswoman Holly Baker said there was "no fire reported" despite earlier reports to the contrary.

"The plane landed safely, the incident is being investigated," she said.

Emergency crews had rushed to the airport fearing the worst after reports that one of the plane'e wings was ablaze.

But the plane landed safely at 5:49 pm (2249 GMT) and none of the reported 200 passengers was injured.

Delta said in a Twitter message that its Flight 30 returned to JFK after the pilot reported an "engine issue."

The carrier said the plane "landed safely" and that passengers were "being reaccommodated."
