Philippine military revises down quake toll

The Philippine Army revised down its confirmed death toll from a powerful quake this week to 26, with 71 still missing.

The regional military commander in the central Philippines with responsibility for the area where Monday's quake struck, Colonel Francisco Patrimonio, had reported that 48 people died, and another 92 were missing.

But the army said in a statement that the confirmed number of deaths was 26, blaming confusion in the disaster zone for the change in numbers.

It said the military's new figures were the same as those of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council in Manila, the overall emergency response agency.
