Pilot dies, co-pilot lands plane safely

The Czech Republic's flagship air carrier Czech Airlines said on Wednesday the captain of a plane flying from Warsaw to Prague had died after suffering health problems during the flight.

"Medical assistance was called to attend the landing of a regular flight from Warsaw to Prague today as one crew member had health problems," Czech Airlines spokeswoman Hana Hejskova told AFP in a statement.

"Unfortunately, they could not save the captain's life," she said, adding passengers were not in any danger as the second pilot landed safely.

Peter Zmolik, head of the Czech Pilots Association, told AFP the "very experienced" pilot who had joined Czech Airlines almost 20 years ago had "probably died during the flight" on the ATR turbo-propeller plane.

Czech broadsheet daily DNES said on its website the pilot was 55 years old.
