Saudi man executed for strangling woman

A Saudi man sentenced to death for murdering a woman during a robbery was executed by beheading on Tuesday, the interior ministry said.

Abdullah Al Ameri entered the home of a woman while her husband was at prayers, tied her up and strangled her while robbing the dwelling, according to a statement published through the official SPA news agency.

He was executed in Al-Qunfundah, a Red Sea coastal city south of Jeddah.

The execution was the 25th this year reported in Saudi Arabia, according to an AFP count.

In 2009, 67 executions were reported, compared with 102 in 2008.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under the kingdom's strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.
