Sri Lanka Tamil party: UN must open probe to make amends for not protecting civilians

Sri Lanka's main ethnic Tamil party is urging the United Nations to make amends for its acknowledged failure to protect civilians in the final months of the county's civil war by opening an international investigation into civilian deaths.

A U.N. report released Wednesday said the world body took inadequate steps to protect civilians during the bloody final months of the civil war, calling it a "grave failure."

A separate U.N. report released last year said up to 40,000 ethnic Tamil civilians may have been killed in the final months of the conflict, which ended in May 2009.

M.A. Sumanthiran, a lawmaker for the Tamil National Alliance, said Friday that the U.N. must make amends for its failure by launching an international investigation into the civilian deaths.
