An undersea earthquake hit eastern Indonesia on Wednesday, seismologists said, but there was no tsunami warning and no immediate reports of damage.

The quake hit at 20.29 (1329 GMT), 249km northwest of Saumlaki in Maluku province at a depth of 191km, according to the local meteorology and climatology agency, which gave the magnitude as 6.1.

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 5.9 and was 148km  deep.

"The quake occurred on the sea. Its epicentre located very deep and far from land. I don't think it will cause damage," national earthquake official Ramdan told AFP.

The vast Indonesian archipelago sits on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire', where themeeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity.
