A Sri Lnakan woman, who had connived as a devotee, had called a young monk to come to her home and recite verses to her ailing father.

When the young priest arrived along with a helper, a gang tied them to a tree.

The gang threatened them saying they had come in search of a woman and said they would publicise this incident, ‘Mawbima’ reported.

They them blackmailed the monk for a ransom of Rs108,500.

Upon a complaint lodged by the young monk, the CID officers of Mihintale police had arrested one suspect after investigations while identifying the rest of the gang.

Police investigations revealed that the victim was called by the woman at night.

The gang, which was waiting for the monk, had taken the victim and his assistant inside a house.

They were physically assaulted and accused both of looking for women at night. They then tied both victims to a tree and demanded a ransom or otherwise they would be exposed through media.

The feared young monk had then called a friend and had arranged to deposit a sum of Rs.108,500 to two bank accounts given by the gang and a few days later they had been released from the gang’s custody.

Police believe that young men aged between 25 and 35 were involved in this ransom case and the woman had been hired for the drama.

Investigations continue.
