Access control systems to the main doors of buildings in Dubai’s Discovery Gardens community are finally set for activation, seven months after their installation in April.

“The activation of the main door access control system is scheduled to take place on November 27,” Nakheel Facilities and Owners Association Management said in a notice distributed to residents.

Nakheel is the master developer of Discovery Gardens, which houses 291 buildings and has over 20,000 units.

The notice states: “In addition, we would like to inform you that once the main access door system is activated, access to the building will be restricted to access card holders only.”

Tenants who were hoping to get their building caretakers to provide them access will be disappointed. The notice states caretakers will not be authorised to provide access.

Nakheel further urges tenants to remind their landlords to pay their dues.

In July, the master developer had issued the final reminder to landlords to pay their service charge dues to avoid disruption of services, and/or further legal action, including accessing the building once the main door access control system is activated.

Nisha Ramesh, a resident, says: “We have been waiting for some time now to know when the cards will be activated. We finally got the notices today (Monday) that states November 27 date for activation.”

She adds: “It’s good that the doors will be shut for outsiders. Families will feel safe as strangers won’t be able to access the buildings.”

May Almiro, another resident, states: “The access cards do for certain provide more safety and security, but we want each building to have a security guard as well. The building caretaker is assigned a whole lot of work and is never seen at our main door.

“There is always a possibility that the doors will be left open, allowing strangers access to the building. A security guard presence will of course help.”

According to landlords, they haven’t yet been informed about the cost of fixing of the access card systems and close circuit televisions.

“I am sure some time later they will send us notices to recover the cost,” said DM, owner of two studio apartments.
Discovery Gardens consists of six themed communities inspired by garden living - Zen, Mediterranean, Contemporary, Mogul, Mesoamerican and Cactus courtyard gardens.

The development spans over 26 million square foot plot and has 291 buildings.
