Dead dad in closet for five years

Police in Japan were questioning a man for abandoning a corpse after his father's mummified remains were found in a wardrobe in the apartment they shared, local media reported.

The 55-year-old man reportedly admitted to police that he put the body of this father, Mitsuo Sonoda, into the wardrobe, The Mainichi Daily News reported.

"More than five years ago, during the winter, I came home and found my father in his bed. He wasn't moving. I left him there for a week, but he started to smell, so I put him in the wardrobe," he was quoted as telling investigators.

The son continued to pocket pension payments made to his father, who he shared the Kyoto apartment with for 10 years.

Police said the remains of the senior citizen - who would have been 92 years old - were found after his son's ex-wife visited the apartment January 4 and told police she "could find no sign" of her former father-in-law.

The responding officer noticed a strange smell coming from the wardrobe and found the mummified remains inside.

Japan is battling to establish the whereabouts of hundreds of senior citizens who authorities believe could be dead, despite their families still claiming pension payouts.

In August, the number of pension recipients older than 85 whose whereabouts could not be immediately confirmed was estimated at around 800, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said.

NY subway riders shed modesty

Hundreds of New York subway riders, unencumbered by skirts, trousers or modesty, took part Sunday in a spontaneous showing of leg despite sub-freezing temperatures.

The 10th annual "No Pants Subway Ride" saw hundreds of New York strap-hangers shed outer garments from the waist down, even as they wore seasonally-appropriate jackets, scarves, earmuffs and other winter garb on their upper halves.

At 3 pm sharp, (2000 GMT), subway riders at six separate meeting points across the city, boarded predetermined subway cars, engaging in typically unassuming behavior like reading a magazine or staring off into space.

But as soon as the doors shut at the stop before they were due to get off, participants were instructed to stand up, shed their skirts and pants, which were to be secreted into backpacks, and briefcases.

"If anyone asks you why you've removed your pants, tell them that they were 'getting uncomfortable'" instructions to emailed participants said.

Once they exited the train, the commuters stood for a while on the subway platform pantless, providing maximum shock effect to their stunned fellow riders.

Many took participants donned their festive skivvies for the occasion, from polka dot bloomers to basic striped boxers, adding another a measure of frivolity to the unusual yearly happening, which also is staged in some 50 other cities in two dozen countries around the world.

Drunk driver escorts 'lonely' goat on date

The 54-year-old driver - who was three times over the drink drive limit - claimed his goat had been 'lonely' and he'd been to a friend's farm in Kretzyn, Poland, to meet a female goat.

'They had had a few vodkas to break the ice and then some more to celebrate and by the the time he left with his now not so lonely goat he was very drunk,' said one officer.

'He was very sorry but he was a danger to other drivers. He's lost his licence and he may well go to prison for a while,' he added.

Rocket carries cheese into space

A capsule containing a large lump of French cheese travelled around the planet twice before parachuting safely into the Pacific Ocean.

The 12kg (26lb) portion of Le Brouère cheese is thought to have become involved in the mission because Elon Musk, who sent it up in his SpaceX company’s capsule, is a fan of the famous Monty Python cheese shop sketch.

The cheese, which was made near Vittel in eastern France, is now thought to be on a barge heading to California following its recovery, reports Metro.
