British queen makes 90,000 friends in one day

Republicans beware. The British royals are a popular lot, going by the response to Facebook pages launched Monday.

By 10pm UAE time, 90,800 fans had chosen to 'like' a page on the monarchy, with another 22,500 personally 'liking' Queen Elizabeth II. Liking a famous person or page means users will receive updates on the person's activities in their personal Facebook news feeds.

The move is part of an attempt to embrace new technologies and the Facebook account adds to the royal family's accounts on Twitter, photo-sharing site Flickr and YouTube.

The page does not allow users to "friend" the Queen or send her messages, but offers updates on royal news and diary events. Nor does it display personal details such as the Queen's relationship status, interests or political views.

Queen Elizabeth II sent her first email as far back as 1976. In 2008, the Queen uploaded a video to YouTube during a visit to Google's London offices, in 2009 a British monarchy Twitter account was launched, and a royal Flickr account was created this year.
